Why this is a page and not a paragraph
Ground work fails slowly, then suddenly.
An excavation that is going to cause a problem usually signals it first. A millimetre of movement on a neighbouring wall, a change in groundwater, an overbreak that was not in the method. Those signals are only useful if somebody is measuring and somebody has agreed in advance what number triggers a stop.
That is what the instrumentation and the trigger levels are for. Not paperwork for its own sake, but the difference between noticing a problem at two millimetres and noticing it at twenty.
Method statements
Movement monitoring
Instrumented monitoring on adjacent structures during piling and excavation, with trigger levels agreed with the engineer before work starts.
Certified operatives
Plant operators and banksmen certified for the equipment they run, with records held on site and available to the principal contractor.
Insurance evidenced
Public and employer liability in force, with certificates issued to the principal contractor rather than promised.
